Remote Research Service Guidelines

1) Research will be conducted in our own archival holdings as well as in online archival resources to which we have access through several subscriptions.

2) Our researchers will not conduct research for you in archives other than our own. If you need this type of assistance, please use an independent researcher (fees vary by researcher).

3) If your request falls outside the scope of our collection or mandate, we will redirect you to the appropriate archives (if known).

4) Your request will be evaluated upon receipt. If it is indeed a request that we can undertake, we will ask you to prepay 1 hour of research time.

5) The total remaining fee must be paid before we send you the search results.

* Example: You prepaid 1 hour and approved 5 in total, but our team only spent 3 hours on your query before we ran out of resources. You will be billed for the 2 unpaid hours before the search results are sent.

We can send you an electronic invoice (payable with Paypal or credit card) once the search is complete, or you can call us to pay with your credit card at 204-233-4888

6) Results are not guaranteed. The fee covers only the time required to complete the search.

7) This service is non-refundable, except as described for requests requiring less than half an hour of work, for which we may allow a partial refund.

8) Copies of archival materials are subject to an additional cost per copy.  Click here for more details.

* Please note that the majority of our archival textual documents are in French. Translation is not a service we provide.

9) Links or digital copies of documents already digitized and published online (obituaries, newspaper clippings, census pages, certificate affidavits, etc.) will be included in your search results, if available.

10) We do not conduct family reunions and cannot release personal or contact information on individuals still protected by the Privacy Act. We will not find your cousins, biological parents, siblings, etc.

11) You can also search our online archival database yourself free of charge. Once you have identified documents of interest, you can then contact us (at shsb@shsb.mb.ca) to arrange a visit to view them in person, or to order copies at the appropriate reproduction fee.

“The families who were leaving Quebec or the northeastern states to settle in Manitoba were for the most part looking for free or inexpensive farmland. Among the fathers of these families, there were also entrepreneurs, sometimes victims of a weak economy in Quebec, who were looking for an opportunity to establish a new business in the villages or in Saint-Boniface.”
