Planned Donations

Why a planned gift?

A planned gift to the Société historique de Saint-Boniface (SHSB) is a powerful way to support the acquisition of new collections at theCentre du patrimoine and to ensure increased access to these valuable collections.

What are the benefits of your planned gift?

At the Centre du patrimoine, your planned gift could help :

  • acquire new collections, especially key collections at risk of being lost forever (communities, families, individuals, dissolved organizations, etc.);
  • accelerate the processing of archival holdings;
  • digitize documents and give access to archival collections online;
  • restore old films and digitize audiovisual archives;
  • create and set up exhibitions;
  • researchers, professionals and amateurs alike unlock secrets buried in the archives;
  • produce educational guides;
  • conduct genealogical research; and
  • repair or purchase equipment or installations in the Centre.

A planned gift can also grow the Centre du patrimoine Endowment Fund held by Francofonds or its Religious Archives sub-fund, an important source of annual revenue for the SHSB.

What are the options for making a planned gift?

There are a number of ways to make a planned gift during your lifetime or through a bequest in your will: gifts of cash or property, gifts of publicly traded securities, gifts through the designation of a charity as beneficiary of a life insurance policy or registered plan, etc. Your accountant or legal/financial advisor can help you choose the option that best suits your personal circumstances and those of your loved ones.

Most often, a planned gift is made in the form of a bequest in a will, because it allows the donor to use his or her financial resources during his or her lifetime while making a gift that will have a significant positive impact in the future.

How will your planned gift benefit you?

A planned gift can minimize income taxes paid during life or at death. Again, professional financial or legal advice can help you choose the most beneficial option for you.

How do you include a bequest in a will?

Preparing a will is important and so is including a properly drafted gift clause. To ensure that the wishes of the testator are clearly expressed and that the beneficiary organization is able to carry out his or her wishes, a clause in favour of a charitable organization must be prepared with the utmost care.

The SHSB proposes two formulations for the inclusion of an unrestricted gift in a will.

Should I tell the SHSB about my intentions?

If you are considering making a planned gift to the SHSB, we invite you to let us know about it because we…

  • would like to share with you the priorities of the SHSB and of the Centre du patrimoine
  • want to make sure that we understand your wishes so that they can properly be respected
  • want to thank you during your lifetime for your bequest in your will and offer you the option to be publicly recognized or remain anonymous as a donor.
