Come and play with history at Riel House National Historic site of Canada! Find out what life was like on a Métis riverlot in 1886 by exploring this unique Métis home Riel House guide demonstrating school program, 2006. © Parks Canadawith the help of a costumed interpreter. Our re-designed curriculum based school programs are suitable from Grade 1 through Grade 12 and are sure to please both student and teacher. See below for more information on how to book a school program.

School Programs at Riel House National Historic Site run from May 21th to June 29th in 2012.

Booking a program at Riel House can be done several ways.

Information needed

  • Teachers' names (all names if multiple classes plan to visit together)
  • School name and contact information
  • Number of students (max. 60 students) and grade level
  • Approximate number of adults
  • Date. Please have a first, second and third date chosen in case your first choice is already taken.
  • Timeslot. The two available daily timeslots are: 10am-noon and 1pm-3pm. Please note that we cannot accept groups before or after these timeslots. 
  • Language of programming. We offer programming in French, English, French Immersion and Basic French.
  • Special needs: Is there anythingwe need to be aware of to ensure a smooth visit for your group? 

 Fees

The admission for elementary and secondary school students for a school program of 2 hours is $2.90 per person.
 
For post-secondary or adult groups (age 18 and over), the fee is the commercial group rate of $3.40 per person.
 
Fees are accepted by school cheque, credit or debit card, or cash on the day of the field trip.
 
One teacher or parent chaperone per 15 students is free. Additional adults are welcome, and can enter at the same rate as the students. Fees include taxes.
 
Please ensure that all schools have a fair chance to participate in our programs: give us at least two weeks' notice of any cancellations, so that we may offer the time slot to another class.

Métis Lands and Riel’s Stand (Grades 1-4)

Who was Louis Riel and who were the Métis people? Discover the Riel family, their home, and the gardens with the help and knowledge of a guide, followed by group activities such as building riverlots!

Rediscover Riel (Grade 5)
Who was Louis Riel? Were Riel and the Métis different from other Canadians? Students will tour the house and then put their knowledge to the test with our new quiz show activity!

Recreating the Red River Resistance (Grade 6)
Learn about Louis Riel’s role in Manitoba’s entry into Confederation and the Red River Resistance. Students will jump into character and recreate key events in Manitoba’s history (1869-1870).

Middle Years Programs

Manitoba: Building a Province (Grades 7-8)
Who made the province of Manitoba? How did the unique settlement patterns of the Métis shape the geographic and cultural landscape of our province? Students will tour the house and create their own riverlots by using aerial images and historic photos of Winnipeg.

Senior Years Programs

Riel: Rebel with a Cause (Grades 9-12)

Rebel or visionary? Lunatic or leader? Your students will explore how this Métis leader and founder of Manitoba has influenced and been viewed through history by touring the house and examine artistic, historic and pop culture representations of Louis Riel.
