Genealogy

Our genealogy research services offer you the option of either ordering a research package or of doing the research yourself on the premises using the many resources available in our archives and library.

Ordering Genealogy Research Services

We offer five kinds of genealogy research options:

  • Proof of Métis ancestry (6 to 8 generations for the Métis line only) - free with the purchase of a family tree book
  • Ten-generation family tree book
  • Twelve-generation family tree book
  • Fifteen-generation family book
  • Hourly fee: This option makes it possible to order searches to be done by genealogy specialists at the rate of $30 an hour. This usually involves searching for specific details such as more information on one particular ancestor.

Please note: We specialize in French-Canadian (except for the Acadians) and Métis genealogy of Western Canada (West of Thunder Bay to British Columbia) only. Also, we do not have the resources to conduct research on any ancestors originating from outside of Canada.

Doing Research in Quebec

To have research done in Quebec, contact the Société de généalogie de Québec.

Doing Your Own Research

If you wish to do your own research, the Centre du patrimoine gives you access to a wealth of genealogical materials (Collections and Research Materials).

Note that if you require an official Proof of Métis Ancestry for a membership application with the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF), you will need to have one done through our genealogy department. The MMF normally does not accept genealogical research not verified by a certified genealogist. Please contact the membership department of the MMF for more information.

The Centre du patrimoine has dedicated the Lionel-Dorge Room to research. This spacious, well-lit area with big tables offers a comfortable setting in which researchers can do their work. The Centre also offers a free WiFi connection (just ask for the password) and there are electrical outlets for your laptop computer at every table.

The Lionel-Dorge Room is equipped with a microfiche reader, microfilm readers, a microfilm and microfiche digitizer, and computers with our own databases and access to the Internet, all for the use of researchers.

The Centre du Patrimoine charges $5.00 a day for personal research. This fee is forgone if you become a member of the Société historique de Saint-Boniface.
